Mantra Opens Intuition
Mantra involves Pronunciation, rhythm, and projection.
Pronunciation: By enunciating the mantra, the tongue taps certain points along the roof of our mouths, sending signals to the hypothalamus, which in turn, regulates the chemical activity streaming into all parts of the brain and body.
Rhythm: Through repetition of the mantra, patterns of sound are inscribed onto the brain. The unconscious becomes the conscious, the automatic becomes deliberate, the mindless becomes heartfelt. Through repetition, the mantra washes over us, as the waves in the sea gradually get us wet. It dissolves us into unison, which is the essence of yoga. Chanting of the mantra, which is all about sounds and vibrations, is the most important. So it comes with a meter or pitch and rhythm. This is just like we have ta lams (adi, rupaka, etc) in classical music. The names of these meters are gayatri (its also the name of a meter), anushtup, trishtup, brihati, pangti, etc. They come with a distinctive time length for each cycle. For example, the Bhagavad Gita is written in Anushtup, the Rig Veda is written in Gayatri meter, etc.
Projection: When we chant from the navel point while articulating the mantra, we not only stimulate the upper palate, but we vibrate the central channel by which prana, or, life force, flows-what yogis for millennia have referred to as the shushmuna (or shushumna by some translations). This dual process is said to move us into the realm of anahat-the realm “without boundary.” Thus it opens up our intuitive power.
Mantra Controls Our Moods Our thoughts reflect and affect our mood, attitude, and general tenor. Our thoughts are silent sounds. And sounds are electromagnetic vibrations. The more refined our thoughts, the more elevated our vibration; the more elevated our vibration, the closer we get to the highest vibration of all-our own divine nature. The entire universe was built on sound, which is nothing but vibration. By vibrating a certain combination of sounds, we are able to tune into various levels of intelligence, or consciousness. Thus, chanting mantras is a conscious method of controlling our moods, and in turn, our frequency and resultant all-around radiance. Mantras increase your auras due to the effect on the symphathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Meditation as a practice has been shown to literally rewire brain circuits that boost both mind and body health. These benefits of meditation have surfaced alongside the revelation that the brain can be deeply transformed through experience—a quality known as “neuroplasticity.” The amazing thing about meditating is that, on top of affecting brain functioning, it can have both short-term and long-term benefits in both the brain and body.
It’s fairly clear that by establishing a consistent practice we can experience enduring health benefits. For instance, the short-term benefits described above are typically enhanced with regular practice. Other studies are beginning to shed light on the long-term benefits of consistent practice. Researchers have found denser gray matter in brain areas related to memory and emotional processing in expert meditators. Additionally, having a regular practice is associated with benefits to social aspects of our health, like boosting our mindfulness, empathy, and resilience. It can also help us regulate our thoughts so that we’re not so quick to judge, diminishing the potentially detrimental effects of stereotypes. In one study it was even suggested that meditation could make us kinder individuals, boosting our levels of compassion.
With recent neuroscientific findings, meditation as a practice has been shown to literally rewire brain circuits that boost both mind and body health. These benefits of meditation have surfaced alongside the revelation that the brain can be deeply transformed through experience – a quality known as “neuroplasticity.
THE SCIENTIFICALLY-PROVEN HEALING PROPERTIES OF SOUND
In one 2020 study, 105 participants took part in a single 40-minute long sound bath. Following the sound bath, all participants showed reductions in negative mood and increases in positive mood based on a positive and negative affect (PANAS) rating scale.
The 20 participants who agreed to heart rate monitoring saw a decrease in their heart rate.
A 2018 randomized, controlled study 0 assessed the effects of music using singing bowls on 60 people awaiting surgery. The participants either listened to music or wore headphones without sound.
The music group showed lower measures of anxiety based on an anxiety inventory. They also showed slight decreases in heart rate variability, suggesting lower anxiety and stress.
A small 2020 meta-analysis O included four prior studies on singing bowls. The authors concluded that there was evidence their use could lead to general improvements in well-being, including reductions in distress, anxiety, depression, and pain.
In some previous research, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate also improved. However, the studies were small, and the review’s authors emphasized the need for more research.
A 2016 observational study 0 of 62 adults found participants reported lower tension, fatigue, depression, and anger after singing bowl meditation. The effects were strongest among people new to this form of meditation.
“Sounds permeate our systems, resonating with our essence, so that inner chaos, conflict, and dissonance seem almost immediately to be transformed into harmony.”
When properly mobilized, sound can specifically entrain the human organism toward the greater harmony and homeostasis that it requires to remain vibrant and regenerate after injury or illness. The properties of sound medicine -entrainment, harmony, and homeostasis- represent the rational AND spiritual foundation for a new movement in the healing arts and sciences.
If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is that it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiological functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.
